About the technology
GlobalVetLink utilizes a cutting edge technology which enables those who view GlobalVetLink certificates to verify the certificate as an authentic electronically signed document. In order for the computer to properly view the signatures, there are two parts of instructions:
- Downloading and installing a Root Certificate
- Activating Adobe features. These instructions, explain how to install and enable the technology to properly view a signed document using Adobe Reader.
Before you begin
Prior to starting these instructions, please make sure that your computer has the following:
Internet Explorer 7.0 or 8.0. To execute the certificate instructions, you must use Internet Explorer. To open Internet Explorer:
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
- Select Programs or All Programs.
- Select Internet Explorer.
Adobe Reader 6.0 or Adobe Reader 7.0. To open Adobe Acrobat:
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
- Select Programs or All Programs. If you have Adobe Reader (6.0 or 7.0), you should see it listed on the list of Programs. If you do not have Adobe Reader listed, you can download the latest Adobe Reader version for free at the following website: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Installing the Root Certificate
To verify the authentic signature, your machine will need to install a Root Certificate so that it can allow the proper signature.
Note: These instructions only need to be performed once per machine.
- Right click on this link and select “save link as.”
- A popup window will ask you if you want to Run or Save the file.
- Click on Desktop
- Click on Save
- Open Internet Explorer
- On the Internet Explorer menu, select Tools then Internet Options
- Select the Content tab
- Click on the Certificates button
- Select the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab
- Click on the Import button
- Click on the Next button
- Click on Browse
- Click on Desktop
- Select the WS_CA file you saved to the desktop earlier (It may be named WS_CA.cer depending on your system settings)
- Click on the Open button
- Click on Next 2 more times
- Click on Finish
Activating Adobe Features
To modify Adobe Reader, you will first need to open it. To open Adobe Reader, perform the following actions:
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
- Select Programs or All Programs,
- Select Adobe Reader.
If you are using Adobe 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 please continue with the following directions. If you are using Adobe Reader 6.0, please follow the next set of directions. After you have opened Abobe Reader, you will need to modify the following settings:

- Click on the Edit Menu and select Preferences.
- On the left side of the screen, select Security and press the Advanced Preferences button.
- At the top of the window, select the Windows Integration tab.
- Make sure all 3 check boxes are marked, then click OK.
If you are using Adobe Reader 6.0, you will need to modify the following settings:

- Click on the Edit Menu and select Preferences.
- From the left side of the window, choose Digital Signatures and press the Advanced Preferences button.
- Make sure all 3 check boxes are marked within the Microsoft Windows Certificate Authority pane, then click OK.
Verifying the changes

After you have completed the afore instructions, you will want to make sure that you have the desired results. Open an electronically signed Adobe Reader file. Right click on the signature and choose Validate Signature. If you see a green check mark, you have done everything correctly and the signature is valid (see image below).
If you see a red X, the signature is not valid (see image below).
