GVL Regulatory Expert David Schmitt, DVM

The GVL® Expert Council was created to better understand our customers’ needs by providing industry knowledge and expertise for product development. We are featuring our Expert Council members on our blog so you can learn more about their fields of research and the experience they bring to GVL.

David D. Schmitt, DVM graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1973. After one year of private practice in Roseville, Minnesota, Dr. Schmitt moved to Stuart, Iowa in 1974 and practiced veterinary medicine in a mixed animal practice there until 1999.

He began his duties in the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) as the Assistant State Veterinarian in 1999 and was appointed State Veterinarian in 2008. Dr. Schmitt retired from IDALS January 2019.

Active in multiple state animal health committees and organizations, Dr. Schmitt served as President of the United States Animal Health Association (USAHA). He is also a lifetime member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), as well as the American Veterinary Medical Association.
