Swine Specialist Translates New Antibiotic Rule

by | Nov 3, 2014 | News | 0 comments

Dr. Jim Pettigrew spoke at the 24th annual Carthage Veterinary Services Swine Health and Production Conference at Western Illinois University, and offered his take on the FDA rules for the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals. On Dec. 11, 2013, the FDA announced it was implementing a plan to phase out the use of medically important antibiotics being used in food animals for food production purposes. Pettigrew stated that he believes it will be challenging, but it will not be disastrous. He added that the new rules do not eliminate the use of antibiotics in pig production; they just add some restrictions on how they can be used. Although Pettigrew does not think this rule will destroy the industry, he does mention the fact that this will cause pig producers to do some things differently. The GlobalVetLINK FeedLINK solution aids this new way of doing business. FeedLINK is a web-based software system that allows easier fulfillment and tracking of Veterinary Feed Directives, which ultimately provides a real-time traceability solution for food safety and animal wellness.
